Doublers' Madness Suite was commissioned in 2001 by Terry Halvorson for his newly formed woodwind doublers quartet. It was first performed on December 9th, 2001 by Terry's group in my senior recital at California State University, Northridge. Each player is featured on a number of different woodwind instruments, requiring them to be flexible enough to switch between the instruments in one continuous piece of music. The first part includes soprano saxophone, Bb clarinet, bassoon, and Bb bass clarinet. The second part includes alto saxophone, flute, piccolo, alto flute, and Bb clarinet. The third part includes tenor saxophone, english horn, flute, Eb clarinet, and oboe. And, the fourth part includes, baritone sax, Bb clarinet, flute, Bb bass clarinet, and alto sax. Throughout the piece different combinations of instruments and textures are explored: some sections contain like instruments, some contain diverse instruments, some focus on high pitched instruments, some focus on low pitched instruments, and some contain combinations of all of these. The piece is made up of four sections: Chorale, Scherzo, Breakdown, and Finale. For the most part the sections are connected together without a break.
